Surprised by the game’s plot
The situation in the game is quite strange. It reminds me of weird Japanese movies. You can foresee anything but not crazy ideas like this. The game is the story of an octopus (yes octopus literally), doing everything to integrate with the human world. It does all kinds of things like pretending to be a human, eating and sleeping like a human, and most terrible of all, doing many other crazy things to hide its true identity before a family of 100% human.
What if you were discovered? Everyone shuns, chases you back to the ocean, the family will be broken, everything you have and try to build will dissolve like soap bubbles… This thought weighs heavily on the player’s mentality throughout the game, making every operation and movement in the game become more reserved and difficult than ever.
If everyone’s life is always a series of considerations and quite difficult, then Octodad’s life is a real, long, stressful, and exhausting struggle. You have to do everything a normal person does, with a soft boneless body or tentacles that can pop out at any time when eating, shopping, taking children to school. You must have detailed calculations continuously and be careful at all times. Everything is a battle.
A sea-of-salt game that challenges any veteran gamer
Initially, I said that Octodad: Dadliest Catch is one of the most controversial games because of this. The very beginning plot is strange, but later, it is all very normal actions, only the psychology is heavy, and carefulness is required all the time. So, at first, critics thought this would be the laziest game of all time, then players would get bored right after playing. But no one ever expected the word “suspect”, when the game was officially released, it created a wave among users. Everyone enjoys and gives positive feedback while playing the game. The only reason is that they found the game extremely challenging and extremely sympathetic to Octodad.
The way you control the character Octodad is not easy at all. Even if you’re really used to your hands, having to do 1001 things and act like a normal human is always a hard challenge for the boneless human octopus with many tentacles everywhere. You may control it in the way you want, but the result can be what you unexpected. The thrilling feeling is always present in every small action, which makes players both excited and stressed like the heart to be thrown out.
Moreover, many people think that (and so do I) Octodad: Dadliest Catch has an extremely charming way of storytelling. Everything normal suddenly became strangely dramatic, suspenseful, and logical. If there’s a bit of a worry, it’s just about the reaction of family members to the miserable expression of the octopus-father. Everything else is a phenomenal match.
Another reason for the unexpected success of Octodad: Dadliest Catch is because of the humane factor. Whether you are a beautiful mermaid, a nine-tailed fox, or an octopus, you deserve to be happy and loved. The game will take you into a world where the relationship between people has many things that are difficult to explain. It is not only the love of fellow human beings but also the love of father and son, husband and wife, and neighborly love. Ignoring all including your strange identity, the fact that people accept you with the inherent shape at the end of the game is really a very humane and heartwarming ending.
The major factor contributing to the game is the visual part
The game has beautiful, charming graphics, gentle cartoon character creation (Simpson family style). Looking at it, you immediately know that the game is about the family theme. In particular, the expressions of the characters in this game, for me, are the “most unique weapons” ever, because they are authentic, diverse, and extremely logical, especially the parts about fatherhood. It is really tearful.
The background music is soft with a few slightly tense parts when the octopus’s weakness is about to be revealed. But above all, it is still a feeling of comfort, sincerity, and gentleness. Like the happy ending of the game.
